What Are Pearly Penile Papules?

Before

Pearly Penile Papules, often shortened to PPP, are small, smooth, flesh coloured or pearly bumps that usually appear in neat rows around the rim of the glans. They are a normal anatomical variation. They are harmless, they are not an infection, they are not a sexually transmitted infection and they are not caused by hygiene, sexual activity or any underlying disease. They are not contagious.
Men in Iceland often describe them with phrases such as hnúðar á getnaðarlim (bumps on the penis) or litlir hnúðar á getnaðarlim (small bumps on the penis). Around 20% of men develop PPP at some stage, most often in late adolescence or early adulthood.

Symptoms of Pearly Penile Papules

PPP are visual rather than physical. They are typically:

• Small, smooth and shiny, in one or two even rows around the glans
• Dome shaped and uniform in size
• Free of itching, pain or discharge
• Unchanged in size and number over time

Causes of Pearly Penile Papules

The exact cause is not known. PPP are a natural anatomical feature, and they are not caused by poor hygiene, sexual activity or infection.

Is It PPP or Something Else?

Other conditions can look similar, including genital warts, Fordyce spots, molluscum contagiosum and sebaceous hyperplasia.

ConditionTypical AppearanceUsually Harmful?
Pearly Penile Papules Small, even bumps in rows around the rim of the glans No, a normal variant
Fordyce spots Small visible sebaceous glands, often paler No, a normal variant
Genital warts Irregular or rough growths that can spread Can be sexually transmitted
Molluscum contagiosum Small raised bumps with a central dimple Can spread by contact

If you are unsure whether the bumps are PPP, a clinical assessment is important because other penile conditions can look similar. Our guide to PPP and Fordyce spots  explains the difference in more detail.

Do You Need Treatment for PPP?

No. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, treatment is a personal, cosmetic choice and not a medical necessity. Men choose removal for confidence, appearance, comfort with a partner or peace of mind. PPP should be confirmed by a qualified clinician before treatment, and nobody should try to diagnose it from photographs or online searches alone.

Why Do Patients from Iceland Travel to the UK for PPP Treatment?

You may have local options, and the decision is yours. If you would prefer the experience, treatment approach or privacy of a UK clinic, travelling to Leamington Spa is an option. Patients from Iceland who choose to travel tend to value:

• Access to an experienced UK clinician, with a confidential specialist assessment
• An established clinic environment regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC)
• A choice of three treatment methods, matched to your papules after assessment
• Transparent pricing agreed before you travel, in pounds sterling
• Consultation and treatment in one trip where clinically appropriate
• Structured aftercare and contact before and after your visit

Your consultation is confidential, communication is discreet, and your assessment takes place in a professional clinical setting by a doctor who will not judge you. You can contact the clinic on WhatsApp before you travel, and your treatment options can be discussed before you commit to any travel plans.

Your Journey From Iceland to Leamington Spa

Iceland to Leamington Spa Travel Route

The journey is simple: Iceland to a UK airport, then on to Leamington Spa and Renew Skin and Health Clinic. Leamington Spa is in Warwickshire, in the heart of England, and is well connected by rail to the main UK airports.

Option 1: Fly to Manchester
Manchester is a convenient gateway. Direct flights from Reykjavík Keflavík (KEF) to Manchester operate all year, with Icelandair and easyJet, and take around 2 hours 45 minutes. From Manchester Airport, take the train to Manchester Piccadilly, then a train towards Leamington Spa, which is sometimes direct and sometimes needs one change, usually via Birmingham.

Option 2: Fly to London
Direct flights from Keflavík to London Heathrow take around 3 hours 15 minutes, and London Gatwick around 3 hours 10 minutes. From Heathrow, travel into central London to London Marylebone, where Chiltern Railways runs direct trains to Leamington Spa, usually taking around 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 30 minutes.

Option 3: Fly to Birmingham
Birmingham Airport (BHX) is the closest airport, with trains to Leamington Spa taking around 25 to 30 minutes. Direct flights from Iceland to Birmingham are limited, so please check the current schedule before you plan around this route.

Journey times are approximate and schedules change by season, so please check live timetables before you book. Iceland uses GMT all year, while the UK moves one hour ahead in the summer, so allow for the difference when you plan your appointment time.

UK Entry and ETA Information

Most visitors who do not need a visa for a short stay, which generally includes Icelandic citizens, need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before they travel. The fee was £20 at the time of writing, and most applicants get a decision quickly, although it is sensible to apply at least three working days before you travel. UK entry requirements can change. Before travelling, check the latest requirements on GOV.UK .

You can contact the clinic before you book any flights. Many patients find it reassuring to agree their plan first.

What Happens During Your Visit?

After a private consultation, a topical anaesthetic is applied, and treatment is carried out by CO2 laser, radiosurgery or hyfrecation, depending on your plan. Expect mild redness and light swelling for a short time afterwards, with tenderness for 24 to 48 hours. Most patients return to normal activities within 24 hours.

Where to Stay?

Leamington Spa has hotels and short stay accommodation suitable for patients travelling for treatment. Many international patients choose to stay overnight, so they do not need to travel immediately afterwards. Please book accommodation only after you have agreed your appointment date.

Results, Expectations and the Lifetime Guarantee

Most patients see minimal visible signs once the early healing settles, usually within 24 to 48 hours, although healing varies from person to person. No treatment can promise a specific result, and Dr Jha will talk you through realistic expectations at your consultation. Recurrence is uncommon after professional treatment can pearly penile papules be removed permanently. If PPP does return, the clinic offers free retreatment under its lifetime guarantee, subject to the clinic terms. The guarantee covers retreatment, and it is not a promise that PPP can never return.

Why Avoid Home Treatment?

PPP cannot be prevented, and home treatment is not safe. Acid creams, wart treatments, scraping, squeezing and home devices can cause infection, scarring and pigmentation changes. In addition, there are devices sold that claim to treat PPP at home, and using them is highly risky and can result in irreversible scarring and permanent skin damage. We strongly advise against any form of home treatment. Read more do PPP removal creams work.
