What is Molluscom Contagiosum?

Molluscum contagiosum is basically an epidermal skin infection caused by a virus, which is known as molluscum contagiosum or poxvirus. This virus produces benign lesions, or bumps, on the superficial layers of the infected person’s skin. They usually appear on the neck, face, armpits, arms, and surface of children’s hands or even genital areas between 2 to 8 weeks after viral infection.

The transmission of Molluscum Contagiosum virus occurs quickly through contact with contaminated objects, skin-to-skin contact and sexual transmission (sexual contact with an affected partner)

Note: The Poxvirus or Molluscum Contagiosum virus remains in the superficial layer of the epidermis. This virus does not spread through coughing or sneezing.
