What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a method of chemical exfoliation of the skin. It is a dermatological technique employed to regenerate the skin, making it not only a powerful anti-aging procedure but also a means to address a variety of skin imperfections. It works by penetrating the top layer of skin (epidermis) and breaking the bonds that are holding the skin cells together. This causes the upper skin layer to peel off (microscopically) and reveal a new one.

This application procedure requires the expertise of your doctor, ensuring your skin’s unique needs are thoroughly evaluated and met. Chemical solutions of various types are utilized in this procedure. These solutions, when applied to the skin, trigger controlled exfoliation or peeling, leading to the emergence of a new layer of skin. This freshly revealed skin is not only smoother but also exudes a radiant glow, making you feel like your most confident self.

History of Chemical Peels

History of chemical peel have existed since the era of Cleopatra. This recognized queen used to bath in a pool of milk and wine to have a fresh, glowing and flawless skin. Medical science has found today two alpha hydroxy acids: lactic acid (found in sour milk) and tartaric acid (found in wine) which gave herself mild chemical peels to improve the texture of skin.

Types of Chemical Peel

Depending upon the depth and indication of skin, Chemical peels are of following types:

a. Very Superficial Depth Peel: Favored in Asian skin.
b. Superficial Depth Peel: Favored in Fair skin.
c. Medium Depth Peel
d. Deep Peel

Deep peels are only done for severe scars and deep wrinkles. We do not perform deep peels due to longer downtime. For indications such as blemishes or pigmentation (Freckles / Melasma), acne scars, active acne, fine lines and skin rejuvenation, results of superficial and very superficial chemical peels are rewarding.

Depending upon the chemicals used we use the following chemical agents:

a. Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHA): Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, Tartaric acid and Mandelic acid

b. Beta-Hydoxy Acids (BHA): Salicylic acid and Azeleic Acid. Used extensively for acne prone skin. They are oil soluble ones so will target acne glands and will control sebum production.

c. Trichloroacetic acid peel: Can be used in lower strength for blemishes and in higher concentration for scars.

The versatility of chemical peels extends to a range of skin concerns. Some key indications for this rejuvenating procedure include:

  1. Acne and Acne Scars: Chemical peels can effectively address acne by targeting blackheads, whiteheads, and mild superficial acne scars. They promote clearer, blemish-free skin.
  2. Pigmentation Issues: From sunspots and age spots to freckles and melasma resulting from hormonal causes, chemical peels are valuable in minimizing pigmentation irregularities, leaving your skin looking more even-toned.
  3. Fine Wrinkles: While not suitable for severe wrinkles, chemical peels can work wonders in reducing fine lines, especially those around the eyes resulting from chronic sun damage.

How Does a Chemical Peel Benefit You?

The benefits of a chemical peel extend beyond surface improvements, touching upon your confidence and self-esteem:

  • Renewed Radiance: As the outer layer of skin peels away, a fresh, luminous layer is revealed. This renewed radiance can be a significant confidence booster.
  • Enhanced Texture: Chemical peels improve skin texture, making it smoother to the touch and eliminating rough patches.
  • Minimized Imperfections: By targeting acne, scars, and pigmentation issues, chemical peels help minimize imperfections, allowing you to put your best face forward.
  • Youthful Appearance: Fine lines and superficial wrinkles are diminished, contributing to a more youthful and revitalized look

Should I use Alpha Hydroxy acid (AHA) or Beta Hydroxy acid (BHA)?

The doctor will decide this depending upon the skin type and indication.

Alpha hydroxy acids are water soluble acids. AHAs are preferred for chemical exfoliation, skin-rejuvenation and anti-aging properties. Some of its advantages are:

  • Enhanced collagen synthesis thus improving skin texture.
  • Increases natural moisturizing factors in the skin enhancing skin glow and quality.
  • Softens the skin.
  • Exfolilates the skin and rejuvenates the skin causing improvement in acne scars. Light scars and skin pores may disappear with few sessions while fractional laser may be required for deep ones.
  • AHA’s anti-pigmentation property improves post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, Melasma, lentigens, freckles and acne spots and acne blemishes as it inhibits melanin synthesis and removes top layer of pigmentation.

Beta hydroxy acids are oil soluble acids. Due to their oil-soluble property they particularly target the oil glands (Sebaceous / Acne glands) and its content.  They would also benefit clients with acne rosacea. They help to clear pores, black heads and white heads (open and closed comedones), active acne and acne scars. Also, as they decrease the lipid content of the glands, the bacteria responsible for acne, Propionibacterium acne cannot survive in the skin and will reduce the inflammation.
