What is a Shoulder Joint Injection?
The shoulder joint is a very complex joint and undergoes a lot of stress at work and in sports. Shoulder pain is the commonest symptoms which may arise from the lining of the joint space, the muscles working on the joint, or it may arise from the nerve irritation in the neck area.
Due to this complexity a thorough assessment and a clinical examination is needed before any treatment plan is made.
Shoulder joint symptoms are very common specially in those who are above 40 years of age and those with long term chronic conditions like diabetes.
Management of shoulder joint problems starts with physiotherapy and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication. Shoulders typically take time to settle. Symptoms may settle for a time and then flare up again.
If the symptoms persist and are affecting work ability, injection treatment can be considered. Effectiveness of steroid injections vary from person to person and sometimes more than 1 injection is needed. Usually, injections need to be given with a gap of at least 3 months apart. This treatment needs regular physiotherapy to continue.
