What are Thread Veins?
Thread veins, also called spider or broken veins are medically called ‘telangiectasia’. They are very small blood vessels within the superficial layer of skin (the dermis) that have become dilated and visible. When small, they appear as red, and as they get bigger, the color changes from purple to red to green
This can occur at any age but are more common in the older age group, and about 88% of females and 79% of males.
Can this be a sign of any underlying conditions?
Genetic influence plays a great role in the development of thread veins. In most cases, thread veins can have underlying varicose veins feeding them. Rarely, trauma can also result in thread veins especially in the areas where the skin is crushed, or fat has been destroyed, or extensively scarred areas.
Does lifestyle play a role?
Crossing the legs, wearing tight clothes or boots are the attributable lifestyle factors. Inactivity or being overweight are associated with developing thread veins
How can I know I have thread veins?
They appear as marks and depths of color on the skin. If the veins are empty they are not seen at all under the skin. But once filled with blood, they can be red to pink or green or purple depending on the size of the vein itself, whether the blood within is flowing or stationary, and its depth relative to the outermost ‘dermis’ layer of the skin.
Other symptoms like tired or aching legs, bulging visible veins, swelling ankles, red or brown stains around the ankles can be present.
What does the specialist recommend as treatment of thread veins?
The appearance of thread veins on the face or body can be very distressing. Treatment by TC 3000 (short-wave diathermy) has shown to produce considerable improvement, depending on the severity of the condition and the reasons why the thread veins have appeared. Diathermy uses a high-frequency current which heats the vein (causing coagulation) and helps it to disappear. A very fine needle is used for this procedure. Because the needle is insulated and the amount of power administered can be adjusted, the treatment is localized and does not affect the surrounding tissue.
The TC 3000 is a revolutionary technical device for the treatment of spider veins, telangiectasias, cherry angioma, petechia, or rosacea. Its thermocoagulation is profoundly different in that there is no risk of scarring or bruising and no need for anesthesia.
