Private Epidural Steroid Injections for Neck, Arm, Back and Leg Nerve Pain

An epidural steroid injection places anti inflammatory medicine into the epidural space, the area around your spinal nerves, to calm a nerve that is irritated or squeezed. It is used for pain that travels, such as pain running from the neck into the shoulder and arm, or from the lower back down the leg, rather than pain that sits only in the spine itself.

At Renew Skin and Health Clinic in Leamington Spa, epidural steroid injections for the neck and lower back are performed by Mr Amit, Consultant Neurosurgeon, GMC 6047850, priced at £950. A recent MRI report is required, and your procedure will not be booked until Mr Amit has seen it. There is no waiting list, appointments are available within two weeks, and you do not need a GP referral.

What an Epidural Steroid Injection Treats?

what is epidural steroid injection

Nerves that leave the spine can become inflamed or squeezed by a slipped or herniated disc, by narrowing of the space the nerve passes through, or by wear and tear. The result is pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness that follows the path of the nerve. An epidural steroid injection reduces that inflammation. It treats the pain, not the disc or the narrowing itself, so it is often used to give you a window to recover and to get on with physiotherapy.
It may be suitable if you have:

  • Sciatica, pain from the lower back down the leg
  • Pain from the neck into the shoulder, arm, or hand, known as cervical radiculopathy
  • A slipped or herniated disc pressing on a nerve
  • Narrowing of the spine, spinal stenosis, where it is a nerve root being squeezed and causing pain into an arm or leg
  • A trapped nerve in the neck, including from cervical spondylosis

In line with NICE guidance on low back pain and sciatica, NICE NG59, epidural injections of local anaesthetic and steroid may be considered for people with acute and severe sciatica. It also advises against them for neurogenic claudication, leg symptoms on walking caused by narrowing of the central spinal canal, so your scan and your symptoms will decide whether this is the right treatment for you.

If you are considering an epidural steroid injection for back or leg pain, it can be helpful to understand the difference between an epidural steroid injection and a facet joint injection and when each approach may be considered.

Neck, Shoulder and Arm Pain (Cervical Epidural Steroid Injection)

Pain that starts in the neck and spreads into the shoulder, arm, or hand, sometimes with tingling or numbness, is often caused by an irritated or trapped nerve in the neck, called cervical radiculopathy. A cervical epidural steroid injection, sometimes called a neck steroid shot, delivers anti inflammatory medicine close to that nerve to reduce the inflammation. It is used for neck, shoulder, and arm pain that comes from the nerve rather than from the muscles or joints.

Lower Back and Leg Pain (Lumbar Epidural Steroid Injection)

A lumbar epidural steroid injection, sometimes shortened to LESI, is used for sciatica, and for leg pain, numbness, or weakness caused by a nerve in the lower back being irritated or compressed. Pain that sits only in the lower back, without travelling into the leg, is often not a nerve problem, and Mr Amit will tell you if another treatment would suit you better.

Base of the Spine (Caudal Epidural Injection)

A caudal epidural injection reaches the epidural space from the base of the spine, in the sacral region. Mr Amit may recommend this approach when several levels of the lower spine are involved, or for widespread lower back and leg pain.

Epidural Steroid Injection or Facet Joint Injection?

Both are spinal injections, but they treat different things, and choosing the wrong one wastes your time and money.

Epidural steroid injectionFacet joint injection
Where you feel the pain Travels away from the spine into an arm or leg Sits in the neck or back itself, often on one side
Typical symptoms Burning, tingling, numbness, or weakness along a nerve Ache or stiffness, worse with twisting or bending backwards
What is treated An irritated or squeezed spinal nerve Inflamed joints at the back of the spine
Imaging MRI mandatory MRI required

You can read more about the other option on our facet joint injections page, and our existing comparison article, facet joint injection or epidural, which is right for you. For related spinal and nerve treatments, please also visit our sacroiliac joint injections and piriformis injections pages, or our Neurosurgery and Pain Intervention Clinic hub for the full range of treatments Mr Amit provides.

Why an MRI Is Required First?

MRI Required

An MRI is mandatory before an epidural steroid injection, and we need the full written report at your appointment. We will not book your procedure until Mr Amit has seen it, because we cannot inject the spine without knowing exactly what we are treating.

We do not have an MRI scanner at the clinic. Where a scan is required, you can bring one you already have, obtain one through your GP, or we can recommend a private imaging centre. You pay the imaging centre directly at their own price.

What Happens on the Day?

The injection itself usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. Before your appointment, please:

  • Bring your MRI report, and the images if you have them
  • Tell us about any blood thinning medicine, allergies, diabetes, or the possibility of pregnancy
  • Arrange for someone to drive you home
StepWhat happens
1 Your MRI report is reviewed and a clinical assessment is completed
2 You are positioned comfortably and monitored
3 The skin is cleaned and numbed with local anaesthetic
4 Using image guidance, the needle is placed accurately in the epidural space
5 Anti inflammatory steroid medicine is injected
6 You rest for a short time before going home with your driver

Who Should Not Have This Treatment?

This treatment may not be suitable if any of the following applies. Your consultant will go through this with you.

  • An active infection, at the injection site or elsewhere in the body
  • You are taking blood thinning medicine, until this has been discussed and a plan agreed
  • A known allergy to local anaesthetic or steroid
  • You are pregnant
  • Poorly controlled diabetes, since a steroid injection can raise blood sugar for a few days
  • Leg pain on walking caused by narrowing of the central spinal canal (neurogenic claudication), where NICE NG59 advises against epidural injections

After the Injection and How Long Relief Lasts

Expect some soreness at the injection site for a day or two. You may notice temporary numbness or heaviness in an arm or leg for a few hours, which is why you need a driver. Relief can build gradually over several days, and usually lasts from weeks to months. It varies from person to person. Mr Amit will see you for a follow up, one of which is free.

Pain procedures are not guaranteed to work. Most patients get meaningful relief, but a small number get little or no benefit, and how long the relief lasts varies from person to person. Your consultant will tell you honestly what to expect in your case before you decide, and will explain the alternatives if an injection is not right for you.

Risks and Side Effects

Epidural steroid injections are widely used, but like any procedure they carry risks, and you should hear about them before you decide. Possible effects include:

  • A temporary increase in pain
  • Facial flushing
  • A mild headache
  • Feeling anxious or having trouble sleeping for a few days
  • Temporary numbness or heaviness in a leg or arm
  • A small risk of infection or bleeding
  • Rarely nerve irritation

Mr Amit explains the full list of risks, including the rarer and more serious ones, before you give consent. Please contact us promptly if weakness in a leg or arm does not settle or gets worse.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. How much does an epidural steroid injection cost in Leamington Spa?

An epidural steroid injection for the neck or lower back is £950. Your consultation is £300, and this is credited in full against the treatment cost if you go ahead on the same day. You get one free follow up, and any further follow up is £150.

2. Do I need an MRI before an epidural steroid injection?

Yes. An MRI is mandatory, and we need the full written report at your appointment. We will not book your procedure until Mr Amit has seen it, because we cannot inject the spine without knowing exactly what we are treating. We do not have an MRI scanner at the clinic, so you can bring one you already have, get one through your GP, or we can recommend a private imaging centre.

3. Is this the same as an epidural given in childbirth?

No. A childbirth epidural is an anaesthetic used to numb the lower body during labour. An epidural steroid injection uses anti inflammatory medicine to calm an irritated spinal nerve and treat pain that travels into the arm or leg. It is a different procedure, given for a different reason.

4. How painful is an epidural steroid injection?

Most people describe pressure rather than sharp pain. The skin is numbed with local anaesthetic first, so discomfort is usually brief. Some soreness at the injection site for a day or two afterwards is common.

5. How long does the relief last?

Relief usually lasts from weeks to months, but this varies from person to person and is not guaranteed. The injection treats the pain, not the disc problem or narrowing behind it. Some people notice a difference within days, while for others it builds more gradually.

6. Will an epidural steroid injection cure sciatica or a slipped disc?

No. It reduces the nerve inflammation that causes the pain, which can give you time to recover and to get on with physiotherapy, but it does not repair a disc or widen a narrowed space. Mr Amit will tell you honestly what to expect in your case before you decide.

7. How many injections might I need?

This depends on your response. Some people need one injection, while others benefit from a short course. Mr Amit will review how you have done at your follow up and advise on whether another injection is appropriate.

8. Can I drive myself home afterwards?

No. Please arrange for someone to drive you home. You may notice temporary numbness or heaviness in an arm or leg for a few hours, and you will be asked to rest for a short time before you leave.

9. What are the risks and side effects?

Common effects are a temporary rise in pain, facial flushing, a mild headache, and feeling anxious or having trouble sleeping for a few days. Temporary leg or arm heaviness can happen while the anaesthetic wears off. There is also a small risk of infection or bleeding, and rarely, nerve irritation. Ask us to contact you promptly if leg or arm weakness persists or worsens. Mr Amit explains the full list of risks before you consent.

10. What is the difference between an epidural and a facet joint injection?

An epidural steroid injection treats an irritated spinal nerve, so the pain travels into an arm or leg, often with tingling or numbness. A facet joint injection treats the small joints at the back of the spine, where pain sits in the neck or back itself and is often worse with twisting or bending backwards. Mr Amit will work out which suits you at your consultation.
