What is Penile and Scrotal Cyst?

Cysts are small, capsule-shaped swellings that are filled with fluid especially as you get older. They are mostly harmless and don’t usually appear on the penis, but it is possible. They may be a symptom of a sexually transmitted disease (STD) or other underlying conditions.

They can occur due to poor hygiene standards, sexually transmitted diseases, exposure to tobacco products, penile trauma, as a complication of circumcision, or may be congenital.

How to identify a penile or scrotal cyst?

These are benign cysts that feel firm or hard to touch. They appear the same color as your skin or may appear slightly discolored, are of the same texture as the surrounding skin. They may not be associated with pain or may be tender or sensitive to touch and they rarely change size or shape. If the cyst bursts, the area may become inflamed or infected. If infection occurs, the area will be extremely sore. They may also develop a high fever and feel fatigued.

These cysts can be distressing for the sufferers especially for single men and that they don’t feel confident enough to seek a new relationship. The doctor may be able to diagnose a cyst simply by looking at it. They may also take a sample of tissue from the cyst (biopsy) and send it to a laboratory for analysis. They may recommend an ultrasound scan of the penile and scrotal area, blood tests, urine tests, and swab tests

Is treatment necessary?

Treatment is not always necessary but if this is affecting your mental health such as your confidence, your self-esteem, you may seek help from your doctors. This sometimes may get infected needing oral antibiotics and incision & drainage of pus but such events are not very common. If the entire scrotal skin is diseased with uncountable number of cysts then you may need a scrotoplasty procedure which is generally offered through the NHS hence we advise you to seek help from your own GP first. If you however have only a few cysts and are unable to get help locally then you may contact us for an assessment and treatment.

Penile cysts are generally solitary and this may be present since birth or acquired later in life. In either case you should seek help locally from your own GP to find out what they can do for you. Please be aware that some cysts would require ultrasound examination before they are treated. A clinical examination is therefore necessary to establish a firm diagnosis before proceeding to its surgical removal.

Aftercare

Some general recommendations should be followed. The involved area should not be immersed in water until the dressing can be removed. The area should be cleaned regularly with a warm washcloth and antibacterial soap. Avoid masturbation or sex until the wound is fully healed. Loose underwear and pants should be used for several weeks.

Are there any complications?

They can develop complications like delayed or poor development during puberty, reactionary hemorrhage, and develop hematocele (where there is blood collection between the layers of a sac that surrounds each testicle), can become infected and develop a pyocele (purulent collection of fluid surrounding the testicle). They can burst and cause a sinus formation or develop recurrent hydrocele (a type of swelling in the scrotum). Ultimately, all these can lead to infertility.
