What is Pearly penile papules?

Pearly penile papules (PPPs) are tiny dome-shaped pearly white coloured papules that typically are located at the groove of the glans penis.

Typically, these PPPs are arranged in one or several rows and are often assumed wrongly to be sexually transmitted by the sufferers.

PPPs are mostly confused with Condyloma acuminata which in plain terms are genital warts or less commonly confused with molluscum contagiosum.

CO2 laser is considered the gold standard method of treatment for ppp but this can be expensive. Parafrenular Glands

These are seen fairly commonly and are called parafrenular glands and according to Dr Jha they can be left alone but in extremely anxious patients they are best treated with laser.

Pearly Penile Papules are completely benign lesions and they themselves have no malignant potential. They are never contracted or spread through any form of sexual activities or have any association with personal hygiene. Even though very little is known about the exact cause of PPPs, but they are known to be more common among those who are uncircumcised but they are also seen to occur in circumcised boys too.

The incidence of PPP (Pearly Penile Papules) has been reported to be as high as 30% in some studies. Although many clinical litratures suggests that PPP is not seen in circumscised boys but Dr Jha has seen and treated many muslim boys who had ppp. PPPs are typically asymptomatic and therefore they generally require no medical treatment according to Dr Jha, which he has highlighted many times in his ppp related videos.

PPPs however cause a great deal of mental anxieties to low self- esteem to these boys and in addition there is a fear that when the sexual relationship become intimate then their partner may mistake them for sexually transmitted lesions of some sort.

Although PPPs are benign it doesn’t mean you have to live with them especially if it is seriously affecting your mental well being. Historically there were many different treatment options including the use of topical podophyllin, surgical removal, electrodessication, cryo and carbon dioxide laser. Use of topical podophyllin was found to be ineffective and the other treatment modalities were observed to have mixed results. But use of CO2 is by far the best of the lot.

Dr. Jha generally prefers to use radio-surgical ablative treatment for PPPs as well many other common skin blemishes. He finds it relatively cheap and minimal damage to the surrounding tissues, therefore there is no risk of post-operative scarring and healing time is short. Dr Jha also very experienced with CO2 laser for removing PPP if you prefer this method.

Post Treatment
