When does the epidermis start to exfoliate following a laser skin resurfacing procedure?
The laser skin resurfacing, also known as laser vaporization, is a non-surgical and relatively non-invasive laser procedure that can considerably improve the appearance of the patient by removing unwanted skin lesions, such as actinic keratosis, acne and scars, or irregular skin pigmentation, such as brown spots, sun spots, age spots and freckles. The procedure is performed by exposing the area of the skin that presents the unwanted feature to a high-intensity CO2 laser administered under the form of thousands of miniscule columns of concentrated laser. The laser beam will react with the superficial layers of the skin and damage them in a calculated manner in order to cause the affected epidermis to exfoliate, revealing a newer, healthier layer. One of the main advantages of CO2 laser treatment is that while damaging the targeted layer of the skin, it also stimulates the natural production of collagen and the creation of new skin cells, which ensures that the patient will enjoy a fast recovery and an excellent aesthetic result.
In normal circumstances, the skin exfoliation process should begin immediately after the end of the laser skin resurfacing procedure. Following the procedure, the facial skin will have a sunburned appearance and will be tender to the touch. The patient will have to be very careful to maintain the skin moisturized and clean in order to make sure that he does not experience any infections or prolonged irritation. Depending on the depth of the laser penetration, the experience of the medic, the quality of the medical equipment and the patient's skin type, the recovery period can last between approximately 5 to 7 days after which the patient can resume his daily routine.
